Miami (FL) Senior scored a 46-40 victory over Parkersburg (WV) South to gain a sport in the championship game of the 2014 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational. The Stingarees will look to become just the second team in the history of the tournament to repeat as champions. Seneca (SC) captured the first two CBHI titles in 1999 and 2000 to become the lone program to date to even win a pair of titles.
Parkersburg South (4-1) appeared to be ready to run into the championship game as the Patriots built a 22-9 advantage with 4:22 on the clock on a short jumper by Mykalyn Fallon. While building the large cushion, Taryn McCutcheon connected on four 3-pointers to lead the way for the Patriots. Miami Senior (12-1) stormed back and closed the half with a 14-1 run to knot the score at 23-23 at halftime.
Parkersburg South quickly regained the lead at the start of the second half as Anna Hayton scored on an old-fashioned three-point play at the 13:46 mark to give the Patriots a 26-23 lead. The teams would swap the lead a couple of times over the next few minutes before Miami Senior grabbed a 41-35 lead when Annelisse Vargas capped a 7-2 run with 3:46 to play.
Beatrice Mompremier, who has signed with Baylor, led Miami Senior with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Annette Dukes added 11 points and eight boards while Alondra Angulo chipped in 10 points for the Stingarees.
Parkersburg South was led by McCutcheon’s 19 points.
