Heathwood Hall Episcopal (Columbia, SC) closed well in a tight contest to edge Penfield (NY) 69-65.
After nine lead changes, the second and final tied score came with 6:16 to play in the game on a layup by Heathwood’s (4-4) A’ja Wilson. The layup was part of a 10-4 run that gave the Highlanders a 56-51 advantage with 4:56 remaining. Penfield (4-1) cut the lead to one point in the closing minutes but Heathwood connected on 9-of-12 free throws in the final three minutes to secure the win.
Heathwood was led by Wilson’s 29 points and 19 rebounds. Wilson, playing in her first game of the season since an injury during Summer play, also added five assists and five blocks. Victoria Dickerson netted 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field for the Highlanders.
Margot Hetzke paced Penfield with 28 points.
