Parkersburg (WV) South built leads as large as 16 points before having to hold on for a 54-50 victory over Fayette County (GA) and advance to the semifinal round of the 2014 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational.
Leading 34-18 at halftime, Parkersburg South (4-0) maintained a double digit advantage midway through the second half. With the Patriots leading 41-31 with 8:54 to play, Fayette County (5-3; Fayetteville, GA) went on a 10-2 run to close the gap to just two points at 43-41 with 5:49 on the clock. Parkersburg South then regained a five-point cushion before Kayla Smith and Darryl Langford connected on consecutive jumpers to pull Fayette County to within a single point at 46-45 with 3:29 to play. The Tigers could not overtake Parkersburg South as the Patriots connected on all six of their free throws in the final two minutes to seal the victory.
Parkersburg South was led by Anna Hayton, who came off of the bench to score 16 points and grab seven rebounds. Taryn McCutcheon added 10 points, six assists and six steals.
Fayette County’s Kayla Smith led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field while Darryl Langford added 16 points.
