Tembre Moates connected on a baseline jumper from 12 feet with three seconds remaining to give Greenwood (SC) a 73-71 opening round victory over Scott County (Georgetown, KY).
Greenwood (6-0), which led by as many as 12 points in the first half, saw an aggressive Scott County (2-3) defense and play around the boards bring the Cardinals back. Scott County outrebounded the Eagles 52-31 and held a 32-17 advantage on second chance points. Leading the way on the boards was Tereka Guyn’s 23 rebounds, falling just one short of the tournament record set by Heathwood Hall’s A’ja Wilson just one game earlier.
Tianna Swearinger led four Greenwood players in double figure scoring with 22 points. Moates tallied 18 points, Iyanna Jones had 14 points, and Austin Davis came off of the bench to tally 11 points. Scott County was led by Audrian Christopher’s 28 points, while Guyn added 26 points to her 23 boards.
