In a wire to wire performance on Monday morning, Chapin captured the Kay Yow Division championship of the 2025 Beach Ball Classic Holiday Invitational with a 44 to 37 victory over St. James at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
Chapin set the tone early, racing out to a 14 to 4 lead in the opening quarter behind strong interior play and relentless pressure defense. That early surge proved decisive, as St. James was forced to play from behind the entire game and never managed to take the lead.
Reagan Haggard led all scorers with 22 points, consistently finding openings in the lane and knocking down timely perimeter shots to keep Chapin in control. Sami Stephenson added a gritty double double effort with 10 points and a game high 15 rebounds, anchoring the paint and generating multiple second chance opportunities. Chapin finished with a 40 to 21 advantage on the glass, including 17 second chance points, a major factor in the outcome.
St. James showed resilience after a slow start and made several pushes to close the gap. Leila Yandle paced the Sharks with 15 points, hitting three three pointers and converting all of her free throws. Krystan Small added 10 points and five rebounds, while Jazz Alston provided a spark off the bench with four points.
Despite shooting an efficient 50 percent from the field and over 70 percent from three point range, St. James struggled to overcome 27 turnovers and Chapin’s dominance in the paint. Chapin capitalized with 28 points off turnovers and maintained control through disciplined defense and rebounding.
Chapin carried a 22 to 11 lead into halftime and extended the margin to as many as 20 points late in the third quarter. St. James mounted a late fourth quarter rally, outscoring Chapin 19 to 9 in the final period, but the comeback fell short as Chapin closed out the championship.
With the win, Chapin claimed the Kay Yow Division title and improved to 8 and 3 on the season, while St. James finished the tournament as runner up and moved to 7 and 5 overall.
