Center Point (AL) used a 16-3 run to open the second half in route to a 42-32 victory over Myrtle Beach (SC) in the opening round of the 2012 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational.
The lead changed five times and the score was tied three times in the opening half. Myrtle Beach’s (5-5) Shavae Shaw connected on a layup with a nice feed from Tanisha Brown to give the Seahawks a 17-16 lead with 2:12 to play in the opening half. Allison Boarden connected on a driving layup with 51 seconds on the clock to give Center Point (10-3) an 18-17 lead at the break.
Boarden’s basket proved to be the start of an 18-3 run on the scoreboard for the Eagles as the 16-3 run to open the second 16-minute half gave Center Point a 34-20 advantage. Myrtle Beach would not go away and chipped away to get the disadvantage back to just six points at 36-30 on Nia Sumpter’s 3-pointer with 1:34 to play. Center Point held on for the win by connecting on 2-for-3 from the free throw line and a couple of back door layups in the closing minute.
Gabrielle Holston led Central Point with a game-high 19 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Myrtle Beach was paced by Brown’s double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
