In the opening game of the 2014 CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational, Fayette County (GA) defeated Danel (SC) 63-50.
Fayette County (5-2; Fayetteville, GA) scored 13 of the game’s first 15 points to open a 13-2 advantage just 3:21 into the first half. The Tigers continued to dominate play and opened a 22-7 advantage on Kayla Smith’s 3-pointer with 8:00 remaining in the first half. Daniel (1-4; Central, SC) slowly chipped away at the lead and closed the gap to just four points at 26-22 on a pair of free throws by Casie Newton. Smith then scored the final five points of the opening half to give Fayette County a 31-22 lead at the break.
In the second half, Daniel’s Newton connected on a short jumper in the lane that pulled the Lions to within one point at 45-44 with 8:13 to play. That is as close as the Lions would get though as Fayette County scored 12 unanswered points to re-build a double-digit advantage.
Smith scored a game-high 32 points to lead Fayette County. Shanterie Cobb paced Daniel with 16 points and eight rebounds.
