Bishop Gorman has visited Myrtle Beach three times for the Beach Ball Classic and the Gaels have placed each time. This year, Bishop Gorman defeated Rufus King 61-58 in overtime to take home fifth place.
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV; 14-2), which won the 2009 BBC Championship and placed third in 2011, looked ready to walk away with fifth place as the Gaels never trailed in the second half and built leads as large as nine points in the final 16 minutes. Trailing 49-41 with 3:47 to play, Rufus King (Milwaukee, WI; 8-2) scored the final eight points in regulation to tie the game and send it to the extra frame. Austin Mitchell-Malone hit a 3-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer with two Bishop Gorman players in his face to tie the score and send it to overtime.
In overtime, Bishop Gorman connected on 12-of-14 from the free throw line and outscored the Generals 12-9 for the victory. Rufus King’s Mitchell-Malone connected on another long 3-pointer at the buzzer to make the final score closer that the overtime period was played.
Bishop Gorman was led by Rashad Muhammad’s 30 points as he connected on 8-of-16 from the field and 12-0f-15 from the free throw line. Noah Robotham added 20 points and nine rebounds for the Gaels.
Rufus King was paced by Malone-Mitchell’s 19 points and nine boards.
