Trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half, Bullis School (MD) mounted a furious comeback to advance to the fifth place contest of the 2013 Beach Ball Classic with a 55-52 win over Bishop O’Connell (VA).
Trailing 34-20 with 14:19 remaining in the contest, Bullis (8-2) used a 21-5 run to take a 41-39 lead with 8:06 on the clock. Aaron Briggs tallied three 3-point baskets during the stretch and Russell Sangster had five points and a pair of assists as the Bulldogs turned up the defensive pressure on Bishop O’Connell (6-4). The Knights went 1-for-6 from the field and committed three turnovers during the six minute stretch.
Bishop O’Connell grabbed the lead back twice six minutes of action, leading 48-45 with 2:31 to play. Briggs connected on another trey to regain the lead for Bullis at 50-48 to cap a 5-0 run with 1:43 to play. Romelo Trimble tied the game 21 seconds later on a driving layup but a Jamaal Greenwood 3-point basket from deep in the corner with 56 seconds remaining gave Bullis a 53-50 cushion. Following a missed free throw by Bishop O’Connell’s Jamaal King, Briggs sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with 10 seconds on the clock.
Bullis was paced by 17 points each from Sangster and Briggs. Sangster also posted four rebounds and six assists while connecting on 7-of-11 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from behind the 3-point arc.
King led Bishop O’Connell with 19 points, while Trimble added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Knights.
