
St. Mary’s Catholic (Canada) held off a furious comeback by Providence Day (NC) for a 40-38 quarterfinal round victory in the 2015 Crescom Bank Holiday Invitational.
St. Mary’s (38-1; Hamilton, Ontario, Canada), which held a 24-16 lead at halftime, built a 36-24 lead with 5:39 to play in the second half. Providence Day (10-1; Charlotte, NC) went on a 14-2 run over the next 4:51 to tie the game at 38-38 with just 48 seconds to play on a 3-point basket from deep in the corner by Tori Powell. Hanna Hall regained the lead for St. Mary’s with 26 seconds remaining on a 12-foot jumper.
Following a timeout by Providence Day, Izzy Gallant’s cross court pass was intercepted by the Crusaders’ Halle Bovell with 10 seconds remaining. Providence Day committed four fouls before reaching the limit and sending Bovell to the line for St. Mary’s with just 0:01 showing on the clock. Bovell missed the free throw but the Chargers could not get off a shot before the final horn.
St. Mary’s was led by Mackenzie Trpcic’s 12 points while Janelle Bailey paced Providence Say with 12 points and nine rebounds.
