Pace (6-6; Atlanta, GA) led by double figures in the final four minutes before having to hold off the Westchester Comets (10-5; Los Angeles, CA) 51-46 to advance to the semifinal round of the 2016 Beach Ball Classic.
Pace built a 45-34 lead with 4:16 to play on a pair of free throws by Wendell Carter. Westchester closed the gap to just three points at 49-46 on a Chris Simmons 3-pointer with 31 seconds remaining on the clock. Mark Sommerville then missed a pair of free throws for Pace but Isaiah Kelly grabbed the offensive rebound. Reign Watkins then hit a pair of freebies with 6 seconds remaining to give the Knights a 51-46 lead.Chris Simmons missed on a 3-point attempt the next possession for Westchester to end the comeback bid.
Wendell Carter, who has signed with Duke, led Pace with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Kelly chipped in 15 points and 11 boards for the Knights.
Westchester was led by Darryn Everage’s 24 points.
