The Kay Yow Division is named in honor of legendary NC State Wolfpack Women’s coach Kay Yow. In her 38 years as a college head coach at NC State University, Coach Yow was one of only six Division I women’s basketball head coaches to achieve 700 career victories. She lead her teams to 20 of 27 NCAA Tournaments, 11 Sweet 16 trips, and to the 1998 Elite Eight and eventual Final Four. Yow was part of an elite group of nine Olympic coaches chosen to lead USA Basketball in the pursuit of Olympic gold. Yow became only the third women’s basketball coach in NCAA Division I history to coach 1,000 games with one program.
The Beachball Classic and United Bank Holiday Invitational Annual basketball tournaments were founded by John Rhodes in 1981. It is played each year in December over 10 days featuring many of the top high school girls and boys basketball teams from across the country. In addition, the tournament also features the Carolinas College Challenge showcasing top girls college basketball teams.
