#20 Cox Mill (NC) defeated University (WV) 82-82 in the opening round of the 2018 Beach Ball Classic at the Myrtle Beach (SC) Convention Center. University junior Kaden Metheny tied a BBC record with nine made 3-point baskets and scored 35 points. Duke signee and Cox Mill senior Wendell Moore, Jr., off-set Metheny’s output with 35 points of his own.
TURNING POINT: With the game tied at 45-45 with 15:25 to play in the second half, Cox Mill went on a 17-1 run to open a commanding 62-46 lead with 11:51 on the clock. Cox Mill refused to quit and Metheny’s ninth 3-pointer with 1:05 to play closed the gap to just four points at 84-80. That was as close as the Hawks could get as Cox Mill held on for the victory.
COX MILL STAT LEADERS: Wendell Moore, Jr., scored 35 points. grabbed 14 rebounds, had three assists and four steals for the Chargers. Caleb Stone-Carrawell, who has signed with UNC Charlotte, scored 18 points while Cody Cline added 16 points, six assists and five steals.
UNIVERSITY STAT LEADERS: In addition to Kaden Metheny’s 35 points, he also dished out a game-high seven assists. K.J. McClurg was 7-for-8 from the field and scored 15 points before fouling out late in the contest. Ryan Nicelar and Rodney Bucklew added 12 points each.
