Great Crossing Dominates Windermere Prep in Beach Ball Classic Opener

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — The Great Crossing Warhawks (8-3) showcased their dominance with a commanding 74-49 victory over the Windermere Prep Lakers (7-6) in the opening round of the 2024 Beach Ball Classic Traditional Division on Saturday afternoon.

Great Crossing was led by Vince Dawson’s stellar 23-point performance, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Dawson also contributed nine rebounds, helping the Warhawks control the paint and the boards. Malachi Moreno added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Junius Burrell chipped in 12 points and four assists.

The Warhawks set the tone early, shooting an astounding 73.9% from the field in the first half to jump out to a commanding 26-9 lead after the first quarter and a 47-18 advantage at halftime. Their ball movement and efficiency were evident, with 16 assists on 28 made field goals and an impressive 64.3% shooting from three-point range for the game.

Windermere Prep struggled to find rhythm offensively, shooting just 35.8% from the field. Brandon Bass carried the Lakers with 24 points, including four three-pointers, but his efforts couldn’t overcome the Warhawks’ relentless pressure. Samuel Shoptaw added eight points and eight rebounds for Windermere, but the Lakers were out-rebounded 42-17 and allowed 14 second-chance points.

The Warhawks’ defense was smothering, forcing five turnovers in key moments and limiting the Lakers’ second-chance opportunities. Despite a spirited 19-point third quarter from Windermere, Great Crossing’s balanced attack and composure kept the game well out of reach.

With the win, Great Crossing advances to the next round of the Beach Ball Classic, continuing their quest for the championship. Windermere Prep, while falling short in this matchup, looks to regroup in the consolation bracket. Both teams displayed high-level talent and intensity, kicking off the tournament with excitement and energy.
