Bishop Ireton Claims Championship with Victory Over Cannon School

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Bishop Ireton High School (8-1) captured the United Bank Championship Division title with a decisive 59-47 victory over Cannon School (12-4) in the championship game of the 2024 Beach Ball Classic Holiday Invitational.

Amirah Anderson led the charge for Bishop Ireton with a dominant performance, scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to secure a double-double. Theresa Hagans added 16 points and showcased her versatility with three assists and four steals. Kayla Washington contributed nine points and five rebounds, while Nyla Brooks anchored the defense with eight rebounds and four blocks.

Bishop Ireton set the tone early, jumping out to a 13-10 lead in the first quarter and extending the margin to 32-18 by halftime. The Cardinals shot an efficient 54.2% from the field in the first half, while limiting Cannon School to just 14.3% shooting. Despite a third-quarter rally by the Cougars, who outscored the Cardinals 18-13, Bishop Ireton maintained their composure and closed the game strong.

Cannon School struggled offensively throughout, shooting just 27.1% from the field. Jakaila Gaskin led the Cougars with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Brooke Busby and Maya McCorkle each added nine points. McCorkle also contributed five rebounds but was hampered by turnovers as the Cougars committed 23 in the game.

The Cardinals’ defensive pressure and ability to capitalize on free throws proved decisive. Bishop Ireton converted 16-of-19 from the line (84.2%) compared to Cannon School’s 17-of-23 (73.9%). Their balanced scoring and strong interior presence allowed them to withstand Cannon School’s late-game efforts.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Bishop Ireton, highlighting their depth, defensive prowess, and ability to execute in high-stakes situations. Cannon School, despite the loss, showcased resilience and determination throughout the tournament, finishing as runners-up in a highly competitive field.
