Andrew Jackson Secures John Rhodes Division Championship Over University in Beach Ball Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Behind a stellar performance from Tamia Watkins, Andrew Jackson (10-2) captured the John Rhodes Bracket Championship with a commanding 56-41 win over University (4-3) in the 2024 John Rhodes Division of the Beach Ball Classic Holiday Invitational on Saturday morning.

Watkins dominated the paint, finishing with a double-double of 24 points and 15 rebounds, while hitting an impressive 10-of-11 free throws. Ni’Yonna Asbelle added 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting, providing consistent offense as Andrew Jackson pulled away in the fourth quarter.

The Volunteers leaned on their defense in the first half, holding University to just four points in the opening quarter. By halftime, Andrew Jackson led 20-16, thanks to Watkins’ rebounding presence and timely scoring from Asbelle.

University kept the game close into the third quarter, fueled by Bri Fox’s 13 points and Lexi Simpson’s nine points and eight rebounds. However, Andrew Jackson’s fourth-quarter surge—outscoring University 21-11—sealed the game. The Volunteers took advantage of University’s 17 turnovers and outscored them 13-7 from the free-throw line.

Andrew Jackson’s defense was also key, forcing tough shots as University managed just 30.2% shooting from the field, including a dismal 9.1% from three-point range. Julia Maisel and Whitney Cox combined for just nine points on 4-of-15 shooting for University, highlighting the Volunteers’ defensive dominance.

While University’s efforts on the boards (37 rebounds) kept them competitive, they struggled to convert second-chance opportunities against Andrew Jackson’s defense. Watkins’ energy in the paint and Asbelle’s shot-making proved too much to overcome.

Andrew Jackson claims the championship with the win, showcasing a balanced attack and tenacious defense. University, despite the loss, displayed grit and determination throughout the tournament, solidifying their reputation as a tough competitor.
