Cannon School Secures Spot in Beach Ball Classic Final with Victory Over Thomas Dale

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — The Cannon School Cougars (12-3) relied on a balanced effort and stifling defense to defeat Thomas Dale High School (3-5) by a score of 47-33 in the semifinal round of the 2024 Beach Ball Classic Holiday Invitational.

Jakaila Gaskin led the Cougars with 13 points, four rebounds, and two blocks, providing consistent offense and defensive presence. Jaiden Thompson added seven points and ten rebounds, dominating the boards, while Madison Drayton contributed seven points off the bench to energize Cannon School.

The Cougars set the tone early, jumping out to a 13-8 lead in the first quarter and holding Thomas Dale to just five points in the second quarter, entering halftime with a 23-13 advantage. Cannon’s defense, which tallied 11 steals and forced 19 turnovers, kept Thomas Dale’s offense in check throughout the game.

Thomas Dale’s offense struggled to find rhythm, shooting just 26.7% from the field and 11.1% from three-point range. Timani Harris was the lone bright spot for the Knights, scoring 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Khya Epps added eight points but faced tough defensive pressure all game.

Despite a third-quarter push from Thomas Dale, where they outscored Cannon 14-12, the Cougars sealed the game with a strong defensive performance in the fourth quarter, allowing only six points.

Cannon School’s ability to control the glass was key, out-rebounding Thomas Dale 44-32, including 22 offensive boards that led to critical second-chance points. The Cougars also demonstrated improved free-throw shooting in the second half, converting 60% of their attempts.

With the win, Cannon advances to the United Bank Championship Division final, showcasing their depth, defensive intensity, and poise under pressure. Thomas Dale moves to the consolation bracket, where they will look to rebound in their next matchup.
