University Holds Off Lower Richland in Beach Ball Classic Semifinal

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — The University High School Hawks (3-2) secured a hard-fought 61-55 victory over the Lower Richland High School Diamond Hornets (9-1) in the John Rhodes Division semifinal at the 2024 Beach Ball Classic Holiday Invitational.

University displayed balanced scoring and strong perimeter shooting to stay ahead throughout the game. Bri Fox led the Hawks with 17 points, hitting a clutch free throw and delivering consistent offense. Julia Maisel added 12 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, while Hannah Stemple contributed 11 points, capitalizing on second-chance opportunities.

Lower Richland was led by Jhnai Sumter, who posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Mikayla Foster added 11 points and seven rebounds, keeping the Diamond Hornets competitive until the final buzzer.

The game started with University taking a narrow 15-11 lead after the first quarter, with sharp three-point shooting. The Hawks extended their lead to 29-22 at halftime, holding Lower Richland to just 28.6% shooting in the first half. Despite a second-half surge by Lower Richland, including a 50% shooting performance in the third quarter, University maintained their composure.

University’s ability to convert from beyond the arc proved decisive, hitting 9-of-26 three-point attempts compared to Lower Richland’s 2-of-14. Fox and Maisel’s timely shots kept the Diamond Hornets at bay, while Lexi Simpson and Whitney Cox added valuable contributions off the bench.

Defensively, University limited Lower Richland’s fast break opportunities and forced 15 turnovers. Lower Richland had their chances, dominating the boards 37-30, but struggled from the free-throw line, converting just 11-of-21 attempts.

The victory propels University to the championship game, while Lower Richland will look to bounce back in the consolation round. Both teams displayed tremendous effort in a thrilling matchup that highlighted the competitive spirit of the Beach Ball Classic.
