Cannon School Edges Miami Senior in Nail-Biter at Beach Ball Classic
MYRTLE BEACH, SC — The Cannon School Cougars (10-3) secured a hard-fought 50-45 victory over the Miami Senior Stingrays (7-2) in the opening round of the 2024 Beach Ball Classic Holiday Invitational at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
Both teams battled evenly throughout, with the game tied at 10 after the first quarter and again at halftime, 21-21. The Cougars gained a slight edge in the third quarter, outscoring the Stingrays 13-7 behind strong bench contributions, eventually holding off a late Miami surge in the fourth.
Cannon’s Jakaila Gaskin led the way with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Freshman Kenedi Dixon came off the bench to provide a spark, hitting four three-pointers for a total of 13 points. Khloe Thompson added 13 points and hit two clutch three-pointers.
For Miami Senior, Alexie Nicolas shone with 16 points and six rebounds, including four three-pointers. Jamir Cook contributed 11 points and seven rebounds, but the Stingrays struggled with 20 turnovers, leading to 20 points for the Cougars.
The Cougars’ defense played a crucial role, with 10 steals and a commanding bench performance contributing 13 points. Miami struggled to find its rhythm in the paint, managing only five second-chance points.
Cannon advances to the next round of the United Bank Championship Division, while Miami Senior heads to the consolation bracket.
