In a game that featured five ties and seven lead changes, Scott County edged out St. Edward 55-54. The win advances the Cardinals into the consolation bracket championship game.
St. Edward (4-4; Lakewood, OH) held the lead throughout much of the first half and built a 24-14 lead with 4:06 on the clock. Scott County (11-3; Georgetown, KY) closed the half with a 14-1 to take a 28-25 lead into the locker room. During the run, the Cardinals' Tameron Manning tallied nine of his game-high 16 points.
The teams battled in the second 16-minute half closer than the first as neither team led by more than five points through the first 12 minutes of the half. St. Edward took its only lead of the second half at 41-40 on a layup by Mark Murray with 7:04 to play.
Scott County appeared ready to run away with the contest as the Cardinals went on an 11-2 run to take a 51-43advantage with just 2:49 to play. The Eagles then turned up the pressure on the defensive end of the court and forced three Scott County turnovers during an 11-3 run that tied the game at 54-54 on a pair of free throws by Marsalis Hamilton.
On the ensuing Scott County posession, the Cardinals ran the clock down before Manning missed a short contested jumper. Josh Harris grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled by St. Edward's James Crawford. Harris missed the first free throw but made the second to give the Cardinals the 55-54 lead with just three seconds remaining.
St. Edward's Myles Hamilton ran the length of the court but had the ball knocked out of bounds with just one-half of a second remaining on the clock. Following timeouts by each team, James Crawford got a 3-point shot off that hit the back of the rim and bounced out to give Scott County the win.
Scott County's Manning added 11 rebounds to his 16 points for a double-double. Isaiah Ivey added 13 points for the Cardinals, while Quinn Richardson chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.
Hamilton paced St. Edward with 15 points and seven boards.
STATISTICAL NOTE: This was the 27th game in the 31-year history of the Beach Ball Classic to be decided by one point.
