Ballard scored a 91-76 opening round victory over Gaffney despite 40 points by Indians sophomore L.L. Peak.
Following a brief two point lead by Gaffney (6-2; Gaffney, SC) on the first basket of the game, it was all Ballard (6-3; Louisville, KY). The Bruins went on to lead by as many as 18 points in the first half and 19 in the second.
Lavonne Holland scored 27 points to lead Ballard into the semifinal round to face Milton (GA).
Peak's 40 points ties him for the 11th best single game scoring output in the 31-year history of the Beach Ball Classic. He finish eight points shy of tying the record of 48 points netted by Mike Bibby of Shadow Mountain (AZ) back on December 30, 1995, against Eau Clair (SC).
